Why is going dairy-free for a trial period important when you suffer with Autoimmunity?

Other chronic diseases and unwellnesses can benefit from a trial period of being dairy-free too – especially when you have menstrual issues. We are what we eat after all.

First the gluten…

In the last blog post, I talked about how the protein in gluten (gliandin) gets attacked by your immune system when you have an Autoimmune disorder. Eating gluten can result in your body activating and attacking the part of your body associated with your autoimmunity (ie thyroid, joints, etc.) but ALSO your digestive system.

Now the dairy?

The casein proteins in dairy are ALSO activators for the Autoimmune storm of confusion for some of the Autoimmune population. Those very proteins that make dairy so delicious are very similar in molecular structure to… gliandin, the protein in gluten that Autoimmune bodies love to attack.

(Oh, and if you have Hashimoto’s, gluten’s gliandin is super similar in structure to thyroid tissue. This is like a triple whammy if you are eating dairy, gluten and have Hashi’s…)

Now, you may have the kind of autoimmunity where you can eat gluten but not dairy, or you can eat dairy but not gluten. That’s WONDERFUL. One less thing to think about and manage! Yay!

If you’ve done the gluten elimination and you still don’t feel great…

If you are still filled with the brain fog, joint pain, headaches, stomach aches, and weird bowel movements, try going dairy free as well as gluten free.

This period of time, this elimination, can be enlightening.

You’ll learn if you feel better or not without these common Autoimmune Activators

Dairy-free includes, and is not limited to, eliminating all cow, sheep, goat, buffalo, etc milk in all forms: from milk to butter to ghee to ice cream to yogurt to cheese, etc.

Sadly, there’s no way to prevent your body from getting overexcited and confused by having gluten and dairy in your digestive system and attacking it.

All the digestive aids, bitters blends, enzymes, herbs, carbonated water, etc cannot stop your immune system from switching into Activation Mode (in my mind, with Hashimoto’s, Activation Mode sounds like a cross between a pirate and Medieval voice), “Gather ye troops! Yar! INVADER!!! MUST protect the ship! Attack ye thyroid and yar gluten!!!! Gah! Dairy too?! Get on it men!”

The best method of preventing your body from turning into a bunch of rowdy drunken Medieval pirates is to create a moat between your body and the Activating food: don’t let the gluten/dairy in, and the rowdy pirates are able to remain relatively calm.

Keep gluten/dairy away, and the body is attacking one less thing.

The less the body is in “drunken attack mode” the fewer antibodies are made, and the less destruction your immune system reaps upon the specific part of your body your brand of autoimmunity goes after.

Make sense?
